The gates that we skip opening,
are the ones protecting some of the most endearing sights for ages. Do you love
to explore places that narrate a forgotten story or take you back to the time
when things were less complicated? There are such weekend getaways near Delhi which
are neither hyped, nor much visited. These are a few destinations near Delhi that
can offer something more than just lazing around.
Here we go!
1. Deeg
- Rajasthan:
Resting silently in the
Bharatpur district, Deeg (about 194 km
from Delhi) is believed to be a part of Lord Krishna’s parikrama pathway.
It has beautiful gardens, fascinating forts, palaces and fountains. If you seek
not just relaxation, Deeg will let you feel the change of culture as well as
terrain. It is a small quaint village with unsurpassable landscape which lets
you spend a day in desi style with a rural backdrop. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
is also nearby so you can easily go there to spot wonderful birds!
2. Nahan
- Himachal Pradesh
A charming little town (around 310 km from Delhi) which was the
capital of the former Sirmur princely state, is picturesque and is perched atop
Shiwalik hills, overlooking lush hills. After spending a few hours enjoying and
absorbing the pleasant weather here, drive to the surrounding places of
interest namely Renuka lake, Paonta Sahib, Trilokpur and Suketi Fossil Park.
Suketi Fossil Park is a must-visit place due to its showcase of prehistoric
animals (through fiber reinforced plastic) whose fossil skeletons were
unearthed. You will be surprised to know that Mesozoic animals once thrived in
this region.
3. Hastinapur - Uttar Pradesh
Approximately
130 km from Delhi,
Hastinapur is the magnificent town, centre to the tales of the epic
Mahabharata. Located on the banks of holy river Ganga near Meerut, it is also a
significant centre of pilgrimage for the Jains for it is the birthplace of
three Jain Teerthankara. The city was once the capital of Kauravas and was
later ruled by the Pandavas after winning the mightiest war – Mahabharata. The
city has survived through ages and is home to temples like Jambudweep Jain
Tirth, Bada Digambar Jain Temple and has a wildlife sanctuary as well. This
silent sanctuary is conserving diverse bird species, mammals, reptiles, herbs,
shrubs and more.Be involved in the ancient period here while you interact with
the locals who have interesting stories to share!
4. Kanatal–
Uttarakhand
Kanatal, a silent hamlet is one of the perfect weekend getaways near Delhi. If you want hours of peace and solitude with a few unique places to explore, then let Kanatal be your host. About 320 km from Delhi, it is a secluded place which is believed to be named after a lake that once existed. With majestic hills, fruit trees, lush forests and apple orchards,Kanatal’sKodai Jungle is just the place for nature lovers and photographers. An easy trek of about 5 to 6 km via Chamba will leave you speechless with its huge stretch of thick green cover with many natural springs on the path. The awe-inspiring views during the trek here will keep you all active and happy.
